Topic: quilting patterns - Area artists return for Horse Barn’s annual juried art show (The Argus Leader)
Artist Peg Lindberg of Sioux Falls uses her quilting skills to show the motion of the water across her work. It took first place in the Three Dimensional category of the the Sioux Empire Arts Council’s Ninth annual Juried Exhibition, showing through Sunday at the Falls Park gallery. The color photo features Jones’ signature white antique door in a setting of blazing red leaves on trees in the background, and green plants with yellow flows in the foreground. The driving horns, the great stage show, the danceable fun music, the great live shows at dives like Phils, the true talent of the brothers Hegg. read more

Topic: quilting patterns - A historic exhibit that’s cut for a general (The Times of Acadiana)
These 35 pieces of textile art not only follow in the careful and skillfully sewn traditions of generations of utilitarian quilters past, but also have been sewn to tell a story — to document a celebration of freedom, friendship and familiarity. Courville says Phillipe Gustin of the International Center and Christine Duhon Brosky, an avid quilter and grass-roots curator, came together to bring their vision of a unique exhibition featuring the work of quilters from Louisiana and various other cities around the United States named for the Marquis de La Fayette, or for his battle sites, or places where he had been imprisoned, as his sacrifice for the concept of liberty. The themes and sewn works of art create a sense of the historical, if not mythical figures, but also an overwhelming sense of place, whether that place be Lafayette, LaGrange, Texas, or Paris. Memories of great-grandmothers stitching together fragments of cloth aside, these contemporary works of art are remarkable for skillfully and delicately pieced together compositions — an assemblage of cloth and concept. Christine Duhon Brosky says she was excited the celebration committee felt the concept was important enough to be part of the Marquis celebration, not everyone thinks of quilts as art. Quilters Sherry Herringshaw, Judy Holley, Barbette Tohline, Chris Wrobel and Michael Young not only commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, but depicted an amazing degree of detail, including within the quilted map of the original territory, images of wildlife, native peoples and the varying landscapes. read more

Books of Style (New York Times)- quilting patterns
TWO years ago, an exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York showcased 100 photographs of New York City. Princeton Architectural Press has released “Paris Changing,” rephotographs of scenes shot by the Parisian photographer Eugène Atget from 1897 to 1927, the year he died. A hundred years ago, as Atget was planting his tripod in the suburbs of Paris, Lanvin opened her atelier. Conservative yet romantic, her silken body-skimming dresses were saturated in rich colors like Polignac rose (a pomegranate blush, named for her daughter, Marie-Blanche, Comtesse de Polignac), and showcased her vision of idealized femininity. Lanvin’s fashions were so synonymous with taste and beauty that in the ’30s, she was a designer of choice for women being presented at the British Court, and the royal family dressed Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth in Lanvin for portraits. His dresses are favored by today’s international high-fashion court Nicole Kidman , Cate Blanchett , Kate Moss, Chloë Sevigny and the long gowns he unveiled in the Paris tents a few weeks ago earned a standing ovation. read more
