Patchwork of patterns has design on tourists - Elizabethtown News Enterprise- quilting patterns

VINE GROVE Cattleman John Wayne “Butch” Filburn was a little skeptical after his wife’s homemakers group decided his barn would be a prime spot for a large, painted quilt square. Filburn and his wife, Nan, have joined a regional effort called Clothesline of Quilts, which is meant to draw tourists from interstates to country roads by showcasing the local tradition of quilt making. The pattern on the two 4×8-foot boards have inspired Nan Filburn to work on her first full-size quilt, thus reviving an old practice in her family. Filburn who gets a “warm feeling” when she sees a quilt picked out the pattern for her barn while flipping through the county extension service’s many books on the subject. A patchwork of local groups are involved with the Clothesline of Quilts project, including the Lincoln Resource Conservation and Development Area, the Cooperative Extension Service, Nolin RECC, the local tourism office and, with the Crume Road project, the Vine Grove Homemakers. read more

Bold quilts cover Speed Art Museum - Louisville Courier-Journal- About: quilting patterns

Get morning headlines, breaking news, afternoon business updates, weekend happenings and more sent to your inbox! Bold and eccentric quilts by 42 women spanning four generations make up an exhibition that has electrified the art quilt world. The 70 quilts, most created from salvaged and discarded fabrics and clothes, are improvisational rather than pattern-driven. Most were created when the town was largely isolated during the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, which makes the quilter’s innovated abstraction a matter of internal creativity rather than learned design.
