Included in the conference are full-day classes on Monday and Tuesday and a special program by Linda Liggen of Cincinnati, Ohio on Monday evening. Goodyear, a quilt artist and teacher from West Kingston, RI, will also be teaching a class at the conference. National Quilters Association-certified judge, author, designer, and teacher, Luggen will teach a class called âOcean Waves. At the Cincinnati Fall Flower Show at Coney Island in October 2000, she was the featured artist, displaying 20 quilts pertaining to flowers and nature. She has been a fiber artist for over 30 years, teaching and creating works in embroidery, fabric manipulation, painted and dyed fabrics, quilting, machine embroidery, fabric sculpture, batik and shibori. Her second-day class will teach further in-depth explorations and learned techniques, and will include Itajimi clamping and discharge shibori techniques to create black-based fabrics with contrasting patters of light gradations. read more

Opening Saturday, the show debuts a dozen Amish and Mennonite quilts recently acquired through purchase and a partial gift from collectors Henry C. The consulting curator of textile art at the DAM, Alice Zrebiec, directed the installation of the quilts in a gallery on the sixth floor of the North Building. With her earnest face, sensible haircut and all-black outfit — much like the Amish — Zrebiec seemed at home with the new quilts. The quilts, according to Zrebiec, represent the different groups under the Mennonite and Amish aegis. In selecting the quilts, Zrebiec looked for how well the works represented the various groups, how they complemented the DAM’s existing collection, as well as the quilts’ condition. read more

Although not on the open water, Blahnik’s kids loved riding in a wooden boat clad in personal floatation devices fishing for O’Donnell’s quilt-fish while learning about boat safety so much that Head Start ordered about a hundred more to be used by about 360 kids in 13 centers in a six-county area, Blahnik said. Both to maintain their order for fish and to help get O’Donnell back into quilting, Blahnik and a group of quilting Head Start teachers collected fabric and other materials to donate to O’Donnell.
