Those quartered sections of fabric usually cut from 44 ” wide fabric are well known to quilters who use them for distinct and intricate patchwork, piecework and applique work. Nine inches of fabric cut from a fabric bolt 44″ wide would produce a piece 9″ by 44″ whereas the fat quarter is cut as 18″ by 22″. If you are looking to manage a slightly out of hand and growing fabric stash, it can be helpful to cut your larger fabric leftovers into the fat quarter size and bundle several individually folded and coordinating pieces together then secure with a ribbon tie. Fat quarter bundles, chosen for their print theme or thematic colors, make great gifts for fabric lovers. Quilters have known the joy of fat quarters for quilt making yet fat quarters easily lend all sewers a hand in making fabric bowls, baby quilts, pillows, basket liners, place mats, padded picture frames, album covers, whimsical soft children’s toys, hair scrunchies, ornaments, tote bags, purses, table runners, doll making and doll clothes, sachets, fabric postcards, gift bags, potholders and oven mitts, pincushions, wall hangings and so much more. Here’s an event that’s ripe for a bit of blanket coverage — The Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2008. At the annual event — subtitled “Fabric, Needles and Thread Exhibition” — hundreds of quilts from Japan and overseas will be exhibited. As part of the festival, more than 300 quilts warmly displaying the richness of the craft will be entered in the Japan Quilt Grand Prix, with a top prize of ¥1 million. In addition, about 80 of the world’s top quilters will also showcase common motifs of the sun, moon and stars; while an exhibition of “Log Cabin” patterns will present some of the oldest and most representative patterns of American patchwork, shown in two sections. In one, 17 antique log-cabin quilt works will be displayed under the supervision of Shelly Zegart, a renowned collector of American quilts. Tickets — ¥1,800 in advance or ¥2,000 at the door — are available at JR East Japan ticket and travel-service offices. read more
