Wisconsin natives Kate and Walter Laskowski moved to Shelbyville two years ago so he could take a job with International Paper, and now she’s branching out from the long arm machine quilting she has been doing out of her home. The Laskowskis hope to complete renovation of the space just east of their current location by late fall and begin offering classes and carrying knitting and crocheting supplies. The hotel has six king-studio suites that include sofa sleeper, wet bar, refrigerator and microwave. Sharp’s Tae Kwon Do now is concentrating its kicks, punches and blocks in the martial art school’s Hickory Point Mall headquarters, having closed a satellite school in Mount Zion. The Headliners bar at 2553 North 22nd Street in Decatur is up for sale and getting some notice. Sammons said he didn’t want to get into why the business had closed, just saying he had faced some changed circumstances that prompted him to sell.

Since its meager beginning in 2004, the number of barn quilts has grown to 55, so visitors can easily spot a barn quilt every five to 10 miles throughout the county. Brochures describing the Barn Quilts of Sac County can be found in visitors centers throughout the state, and barn quilt maps are available in convenience stores, museums, city offices and a variety of other locations in Sac County. Selness’ parents, Harold and Dorothy Hendel, of rural Caledonia, were fascinated with the barn quilts in Iowa, and completed a barn quilt in April for their barn built in 1928 on Prairie Ridge Road. Other quilters and their locations include Duane and Deloris Deters on their barn just west of the Houston County Airport; John and Patti Schulte on their barn just east of Beaver Creek Valley State Park, Blaine and Dianne Schuldt on CSAH 12 west of Caledonia, and Dave and Betsy Pieper, on Houston County 249 just east of town.
