This Christmastime quilting project isn’t out of the ordinary for Cramer, who usually fashions hand-made presents for her family for the holidays. Anderson, Fairman and a third daughter, Regina Miller, all said they have helped their mother with quilt-making, piecing throws together, though Cramer does most of the actual quilting. Cramer returns to the sewing machine to thread borders around the entire throw, at which point it’s ready to be attached to a quilting frame. The wooden frame pins the material down and pulls it tight, allowing Cramer to sit and add intricate hand-sewn detailing, threading patterns into the fabric to create. With all three layers of the quilt stretched tight on the frame, Cramer begins the most time-consuming part of the process, the quilting itself. When a friend was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo a bone marrow transplant, Cramer donated a quilt to raffle off to help the woman’s family cover medical expenses.

McBean liked Erica’s use of bold colors, and the drawings — though simple — were well done. Her design — wood block print of angels on mailing paper — intrigued the judges. Erica Perine, 12, of High Point won the youth category with her traditional holiday design.
