Quilter Alma Mullet shows Barb Oswald of Killbuck some of her pieces during a gathering at Helping Hands Quilt Shop in Berlin. The founder of Helping Hands Quilt Shop kept on piecing quilt tops after leaving the store at age 79. Mullet, 93, shared the story of Helping Hands on May 22 before a small crowd in an after-hours presentation at the store. In a short while they evolved into Helping Hands and its mission of funding charitable works through the Helping Hands Quilt Foundation. Mullet’s quilts will begin showing up in the store showroom, finished by a new generation of quilters, said Helping Hands General Manager Linda Myers.

Technically, the animal’s name is pronounced Ga-new, but it seems easy enough for the town to - temporarily, anyway - think of itself as Ga-New London. There are 27 gnus in all set to invade the streets of New London this weekend - a preview party last weekend brought in over 150 visitors to see the full herd for the fist time. Margaret Dwyer’s “New Hampshire Quilted Sampler” - she chose to stick with the traditional spelling of ‘New’ - offers a gnu covered in different squares of quilting patterns. The Gnus of New London are featured in a booklet displayed in most New London businesses - if patrons bring their books to most of the gnu sponsor businesses and get their booklets stamped, they can collect a pin through the Chamber of Commerce.

While Hall has bought and sold over 1,000 quilts, she has bought and sold over 10,000 feed sacks. During her lecture, Hall demonstrated items made throughout the decades from feed sacks, and passed along bits of feed sack trivia. For instance, feed sacks prior to 1943 held commodities measuring 98 pounds, 49 pounds, 24 and a half pounds, 12 and a half pounds and six and a half pounds. Hall held up a quilt made from eight 100-pound feed sacks that had the seams taken out and then were all sewn together with four opened sacks comprising the front of the quilt and another four for the back.
