Arts & Crafts Fair - Beckley Register-Herald- About: quilting patterns

Friday marked Lou Royal’s 44th year selling her homemade fudge, potato and strawberry candy at the annual Appalachian Festival Arts & Crafts Fair — itself in its 45th year. This is our fifth year at this particular fair, and we love coming back here because I was born and raised in Beckley. Held in conjunction with the fair for the 36th year, the Appalachian Treasures Quilt Show has quilts on display and features ongoing demonstrations of different phases of quilting. Maureen Helvey, of South Charleston, looks over some gourds Friday at the Bowen Limited booth, owned by Janet Brown of Sophia, during the Appalachian Festival Arts & Crafts Fair at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Mimi Pulliam, of Meadow Bluff, left, and Mary Ann Cullop, of Beaver, give hand-crafted quilts the once-over while visiting the displays at the arts and crafts fair Friday. (quilting patterns) Fernandez's quilts tell stories and more - Center Post Dispatch

SAGUACHE The pioneer families bringing the first quilts to America’s shores in the 1700s began a family tradition that has continued in America to the present day. Quilt maker Sara Fernandez, whose quilt collection is currently on display at the Saguache Museum, discussed the many different patterns and styles of her craft and explained the different patterns of scrap quilts last Sunday. She told stories behind the quilts she has made and exhibited some of the antique quilts she has found over the years at garage sales and antique shops. Another quilt with a Log Cabin and flag design on display at the museum was discovered in a trashcan at the Centerville Cemetery in Chaffee County. The hardest quilt she ever made was a “Caesar’s crown” quilt, one she began shortly after her marriage 13 years ago.
