Brilliant quilts of all kinds were on proud display Saturday at the Garden Party Quilt Show in Lompoc. Quilt Guild, from Lompoc, Santa Maria, Buellton and Solvang, offered a close-up view of more than 100 of their quilts, from queen size to wall-hanging size. Some followed traditional patterns, but with bright new colors, while many others broke tradition with kaleidoscope patterns, landscapes, florals and humorous scenes. Vintage sewing machines are on display, and guild members will have quilts and quilted items for sale.

The quilt is truly a retirement memento as Thyren filled in the corners and the center of the quilt with a list of all the titles Utter held while serving at Sussex County Technical School. Utter graduated from Sussex Tech as a welder in 1975 and later switched direction to earn a degree in history at East Stroudsburg University. While at Sussex County Technical School, he served as a history teacher, building trades teacher, principal and he recently retired as vice principal. Apparently many other people like the quilt as it earned a People’s Choice Award at the Sussex County Fair this year.
