The Greeley Museum was bequeathed the quilt by a family in the Briggsdale, Colorado area, who found the quilt folded in a hope chest. Museum officials theorize the woman who stitched the quilt put it away sometime in the 1930s with the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. According to “The Denver Post,” museum officials say the quilt will be displayed at some point, but not before there is discussion and dialogue about the origins of the symbol. Stanley’s Trenton shop, Sewing By The Sea, is four miles from Ellsworth set back from Route 3. When Gary’s father, fisherman and boat builder James Stanley retired in 1997, he gave Gary his boat and gear. Best of all, one evening each month, and more often as Christmas approaches, people can rent space at her shops, bring whatever they’re working on, either hand or machine work, including mending and knitting, and Stanley goes from table to table helping the user. Here it is, this all-encompassing fabric shop set back from the road on Eastern Maine’s rural coast, yet at Sewing By The Sea, Stanley and her fishermen’s wives work and thrive.

But when you make your own - out of a colorful sheet, an old T-shirt or even crocheted, shredded plastic bags - you won’t just reap the karmic rewards (each reusable bag translates into 1,000 disposable bags you didn’t touch), you’ll save the cash you might have spent on a swanky, commercially made version. The British schoolteacher was so appalled by the plastic bag impact on marine wildlife - experts estimate that 100,000 marine creatures die every year after ingesting bits of plastic - she rounded up a few friends in 2007 to sew cloth shopping bags and distribute them outside supermarkets in Suffolk. Now, California’s on deck to become the first state to ban plastic bags and add a surcharge to their brethren, the lowly brown paper sack, with AB 1998, which has passed the State Assembly hurdle and heads to the Senate later this year. If you’re comfortable around a sewing machine - and know what a French seam is - you’ll find Morsman’s guerrilla bags a breeze.
