PROVOCATIVE PARALLELS: THE MODERN ART OF ANTIQUE QUILTS - ArtfixDaily- quilting patterns

The compositions of Josef Albers, Frank Stella, Sol LeWitt, Victor Vasarely, Jasper Johns, Bridget Riley, Ellsworth Kelly, Andy Warhol and Sean Scully, for example, are so like some antique pieced quilts in their appearance and format that one has to wonder whether this was merely a spontaneous generation of ideas or whether artists were influenced by the works of unknown quilt makers of the preceding century. The Homage to the Square color exercises of Josef Albers explore tonal relationships in a way that Amish quiltmakers achieved decades earlier with color saturated wools. Such quilts offer inch by inch visually compelling wall coverage for very little money compared to works of similar graphics and size by name artists that today can sell for six figures or more. The nation’s premier resource for antique quilts, hooked rugs, coverlets, rag carpet, textiles and American folk art.

Myron Holdenried and Chuck Carpenter installing the “Lady of the Lake” quilt block at Mt. KELSEYVILLE – Nancy and Chuck Carpenter recently participated in the installation of a quilt barn block pattern onto their co-op shed located at 2550 Big Valley Road, Kelseyville. Konocti Growers began in 1926 as the Lake County Fruit Exchange, an agricultural co-operative that processed 17,000 tons of pears annually. History has it that the “Lady of the Lake” quilt block was named after a poem by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1810. Penny Halgren, The Quilting Coach, states, “Pioneer men and women loved the heroic tales of Sir Walter Scott, and the women honored him in their most practiced method of artistic expression by naming a patchwork block after the poem.
