During the war, neither side had enough money to buy blankets for the soldiers so the women had to make them, McLaughlin said. Taking a page out of the history books after the September 11 attacks, McLaughlin and her friends made 30 quilts to send to the American soldiers stationed overseas. Quilt show to draw thousands to KC this weekend - KansasCity. A wholesale trade show will bring about 6,000 visitors to the Kansas City Convention Center Friday through Sunday. But about 2,700 vendors and 3,300 fabric and quilt shop owners and quilting instructors who have the proper credentials are expected, said Bob Ruggiero, an organizer. For the third time since 2002, the International Quilt Market, organized by Quilts Inc. Vendors include manufacturers of fabric, sewing and quilting machines, notions, patterns, quilting books and other quilting equipment. Although the international trade show isn’t open to the public, Kansas City Star Quilts, a book publishing company, is inviting the public to view more than 150 quilts made from quilt patterns published by the newspaper over the years.

Mary Gladwin, Oxford archivist, addresses a gathering at Sparta United Church Saturday to unveil the Southwest Ontario Barn Quilt Trails, a network of barn quilts across the Sand Plains counties. Organizers, volunteers and regional politicians were among those at Sparta United Church Saturday afternoon to officially unveil the Southwest Ontario Barn Quilt Trail, the longest barn quilt trail in Canada. The trail spans across Elgin, Oxford, Norfolk, Brant and Middlesex counties and is comprised of over 100 quilt locations where visitors can see on a self-guided tour. Last September, the federal Sand Plains Community Development Fund provided members of the Elgin, Oxford, Norfolk Association of Museums $178,000 to establish the trail through the five Sand Plains counties.

Washington ALP Students Create Quilts For GA Home - post-journal. The Washington Middle School Advanced Learning Program recently donated Math Quilts to the GA Home. The quilts were created during after-school sessions with Sheri Brandes, the school’s Family & Consumer Science teacher. The students used their geometry and sewing skills to create four quilts with patterns such as Amish Star, Four Patch, Crazy Quilt and Coin Stack. Spencer Jasper demonstrates a handmade lacing technique at the Arrow Rock Textile Tour on Saturday, May 5. On Saturday, May 5, they hosted a booth in the Arrow Rock Textiles Tour and showed spectators how the Europeans handcrafted the fine lace in the 13th century. Beginning with a First Saturday Lecture in the Visitors’ Center, Maryellen McVickers explained that before the 20th century these textile materials were precious, and typically even every day clothes were designated to family and friends in wills. The Barn Quilts of the Boonslick Tour combines McVicker’s desire to preserve historic barns with once popular quilting patterns. Beyond textiles, Friends of Arrow Rock also staffed several of its properties with volunteers ready and eager to provide local historic lessons. At Sites Gun Shop Jim Bird explained the history of fire arm production in Arrow Rock.

Kaye Wood demonstrates a tool she made for quilting at her Sun City home Tuesday. Kaye Wood has written a number of books detailing her quilting techniques. Wood has created a quilting method meant to simplify the craft process, and her business includes 45 different patterns with more in the works, more than 20 books, and almost a dozen tools she personally designed. Wood, who moved to Sun City full time this year from Michigan, said she receives the most joy from meeting other quilters and teaching her methods. Wood said that when she first started quilting, she wanted to simplify the process, and it made more sense to figure out the shapes and angles of the quilt first, then make the cuts, which she does in strips instead of individually. Wood said she is glad she�s made quilting easier and she will be teaching classes around the Valley, including with the Sun City Sew �N Sew Club.
