NASHUA, Iowa — Giant pumpkins, flowers planted in quilt block designs, eggplant in many colors and shapes and flower varieties that are getting hardier and more colorful each year were featured at the recent Iowa State University Demonstration Home Garden field day at the Nashua Research Farm. Cindy Haynes, ISU horticulture associate professor, who coordinates the demonstration gardens, said research farm superintendents are competing to see who can grow the largest pumpkin. The favorite part of the garden for Haynes is an area where Pecinovsky planted marigolds, petunias and vinca in two red, gold and white quilt block patterns she designed. A fourth of the garden was planted to tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, beans, sweet corn and zinnias in soils amended or not amended with compost. Egg plant varieties ranging from the standard deep purple Epic to purple striped Listada de Gandia, green Applegreen, white Ghostbuster, orangish red Jilo Tingua Verde to the small Red Ruffled, which resembles miniature pumpkins, are all producing abundantly. Myrna Ross, whose late husband, Ken, was research farm superintendent for many years, still helps Pecinovsky with the garden.

Kathy Havelka of Louisburg spent seven months of her life planning, stitching and piecing together a masterpiece, her favorite creation �” a quilt she calls, �@ 50 Not Crazy, Just Nearly Insane. The colors and shapes are as numerous as the stitches and fabrics she used to create her colorful collection of creative expression, which was recently chosen as a semifinalist in the American Quilter�s Society Quilt Show and Contest, which will be held October 6-9 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Out of thousands of quilts, AQS judges must select fewer than 200 to compete at the third annual show, which is one of the three largest quilt shows in the United States. And, it�s one of the first quilts she�s ever put together, as she first began quilting in 2007 when the Kansas City Star featured a block-of-the-month section, where quilters would sew one square of twelve every month. That�s how she got the quilting bug, which led to the creation of about 20 quilts since her humble beginnings, including �@ 50 Not Crazy, Just Nearly Insane. Without a competitive nature, Havelka said she will keep on quilting because it�s her passion and creative outlet.

Everett Drevs of Estherville had his pattern selected from a number submitted from around the county for a quilt mosaic that graces the outside of the center. The mosaic actually includes two copies of 102 different patterns, one for every county in Iowa plus one additional for Cherokee, Keokuk and Black Hawk counties, which Drevs said have two county fairs each. Later, his mother, Beulah Drevs, was staying with him and cut pieces from dresses once worn by Drevs’ four daughters for a quilt she wanted to make. They included one by his wife’s grandmother, Winnie Doolittle, started in the 1930s or 1940s; one by his wife’s other grandmother, Della Shields, in the 1950s; one by his wife’s mother, Vila Doolittle; one by his grandmother, Cora Harmes, started in the 1930s and one by his sister-in-law’s grandmother Pride started in the 1930s or 1940s. So, between finishing heirloom quilts by family members and starting his own which were inspired by antique patterns, Drevs has produced quite a collection of quilts. The quilt pattern Drevs submitted for the exhibit at the Jacobson Exhibition Center is a double pinwheel on an octagon inspired by a 1940s pattern.

Or the 78-year-old painter, who is quick to point out that she has a 79th birthday this October, may point out “The Quilter,” a painting of her 87-year-old sister, Hazel Hudnell. But Robertson quickly can point out the craftsmanship of the other art on display with her paintings at the Ridgeland library. For Hudnell, the art comes from taking pieces of fabric and stitching them together into quilts and dazzling patterns. With all the pieces are together in the display room, the “Sisters in Art” exhibit is an homage to Southern culture and sights, ranging from the aforementioned county fair to the Mississippi Capitol to quilted patterns that look as if they were part of family heirloom passed down through the generations. From Hudnell’s hand-stitched pillows and elaborate quilt patterns to Robertson’s uncanny ability to capture life in her portraits, the sisters have pieced together a remarkable oeuvre of Southern art. Local artist Gwin Robertson, 78, has paintings on display at the Ridgeland Library alongside needlework by her sister, Hazel Hudnell, 87.

SKANEATELES �” A resurgence of quilting in the United States occurred during the bicentennial years, and it was during that same time period that Patricia �Patty� Elkovitch began quilting. At present she�s teaching a Civil War quilting class and the participants are each making a quilt, copying a design that was popular during that time period. Another signature quilt includes a children�s lap quilt that includes 30 blocks that depict the illustrations, as well as the signatures, of the authors and illustrators of some of the more popular children�s books from the �70s, �80s and �90s. Some of the illustrations on the quilt include �Babar� (Laurent de Brunhoff), �The Christmas Alphabet� and �Cookie Count� (both by Robert Sabuda), �Draw Me A Star� and �The Very Busy Spider� (both by Eric Carle), �Where The Wild Things Are� (Maurice Sendak) and �Babushka�s Doll� (Patricia Polacco).

Boo Davis likes to say that she makes quilts “just like your metal-loving, half-blind grandma would. Eagerly rifling its pages for patterns like “God Bless the Children of the Beast” — the title of a Motley Crue classic that Ms. I set out to do a hard-edged, metal-infused guide to quilting. I designed an angel of death pattern, and I’m still waiting to make the quilt. It was a journey into madness unlike no other. To me, when a quilt ceases to be cozy or if it’s so precious it has to be stuck on a wall, it’s not of interest anymore.
