Inspired by traditional quilting design, Winters' pieces are small scales works that incorporate beautiful papers from around the world with calligraphy; many replicate the magnificence of stained glass featured in European cathedrals. Winters' make-and-take session is scheduled in concert with the Ford House's winter quilt focus on quilting. Experience an old-time quilting bee as participants gather 'round a large quilt frame to create a group quilt that will be displayed at the Ford House.

Debbie Maddy, a Graham quilt designer, traveled to New York City to participate in “Sisterhood of Dreamers to Doers for NY Women’s Shelter,” a group created by Martha Stewart. Besides filling quilt orders, designing quilt patterns and teaching quilt classes, she mans an impressive Web site and blog at Calico Carriage. The first day, she met the other 40 Dreamers and hosted a luncheon for 54 women and 35 children living in the New Horizons shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Maddy has since joined a subgroup, “Sisterhood of Dreamers to Doers for NY Women’s Shelter,” who volunteered to host a luncheon for women in New Horizons Shelter. Maddy found out later that one woman uses her quilt at the shelter, and two of the women saved the quilts for when they have homes of their own. Maddy is bringing donated items for the goodies bags, including perfume and cosmetic samples, kids’ homemade slippers, toys, fabric-covered journals and redecorating supplies.

According to Roxann Baker of the Western Wayne County Quilting Guild, quilted clothing far predates the needlework of early American and Victorian women who used the technique for bed coverings. This month, the Belleville Area Museum will present Patches & Patterns, a display and exhibit of more than 100 quilts in response to the growing interest and recognition of quilting in America. Baker firmly believes the role of quilts as symbols and signals during the Underground Rail Road effort to guide runaway slaves north to freedom, although there are many who claim that is a myth. Quilting, she said, was a dying art during the 70s, 80s and 90s, until the guild and other groups across the country began to actively push the art form and pass it on to younger craftsmen.

Three longtime local quilters — Joan Goldfarb from Wareham, Laurie Despres from Fairhaven, and Helen Weinman of Hyannis — visited the museum show and shared their perspectives on what makes Crow’s quilting worth seeing, whether you appreciate fine quilts or just want to stay at the edge of contemporary art. Weinman, who owns Heartbeat Quilts in Hyannis, has been a longtime follower of Crow’s work and even sells some of Crow’s custom-made fabrics in her store.
