Sometimes, she'll put on a dress only to find it has a gaping hole where she's cut out fabric for one of her quilts. She brought her quilts to the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center on Sunday afternoon for the first in a series of four trunk shows that supplements the center's annual Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit. Karen Janeen Weeks came to Sunday's trunk show from Syracuse, where she meets every Saturday morning with Conte-Gaugel as part of a quilting group at the Beauchamp Library. But in 1999, she discovered the fascination of quilting after a Judy Dales' slide show introduced her to the world of art quilts.

While an exhausted Evelyn shows three women an appliqué technique after the event (which was very successful), she pricks her finger and blurts out her diagnosis.

Brenda Roetcisoender of Brenda’s Wood Creations will be offering her scroll saw creations including clocks, ornaments, shelves, shelf sitter word art and wall hangings as well as crocheted hats of various sizes and colors made with double yarn for extra warmth. Members of the guild provided the library with a display of quilted items illustrating a variety of techniques as the Landstuhl Library featured books about quilting. Gordon Ashlee, guild president, was on hand to offer information and techniques to those who visited the program. Ashlee demonstrated fabric cutting using the latest quilting methods and demonstrated his designing process using grid paper. Also on display was Ashlee’s personal quilting notebook loaded with photos of his quilts and quilting patterns. The guild also makes quilts for babies in intensive care at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

Greene is showing 20 quilts she’s made this year, everything from queen-sized bed quilts to smaller art quilts or even table runners, many of them featuring the colorful fabrics designed by Kaffe Fassett, a design icon in the fabric world. She works in a room off her kitchen in the Greenes’ Gassetts home, and she says the biggest luxury she has is what she calls her “design wall,” a wall covered with thin cotton batting, (the guts of any quilt), which will hold the pieces of fabric as she mixes and matches colors and patterns and design. Her “Sunshine and Shadows,” a traditional pattern which uses fabrics to convey darkness to light, features Kaffe Fassett fabric in half-square triangles and 4-inch squares. And her “Poppy Convergence,” uses a method called converge designed by quilter Ricky Tims, where, in Greene’s case, a large piece of poppy fabric is cut up into smaller pieces and reorganized along a grid. And in the spirit of the times, Greene has done a “Red State” quilt and a “Blue State” quilt, matching quilts in the same fabric, but using what she called different colorways. Greene uses what is called “free motion” quilting to complete the quilt, which gives her a great deal of freedom on her sewing machine to do the quilting.

More than 165 artists from throughout the United States offered their wares at the 37th annual Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) Renaissance ArtsFaire, southern New Mexico’s largest juried art show and cultural event, Nov. Visual artists offered everything from Renaissance swords and beribboned and flowery headgear and other pretty accessories for winsome maidens to cutting edge contemporary paintings, sculpture and multimedia works. Opening day, there was a friendly meeting between some of the more serious performance artists as Bob “Robert the Ratcatcher” Diven, took a break from setting up his rodent-hurling catapult to greet Carole Shirreffs, who is known as “Clare Angelica,” when she dons her nun’s habit to join reenactments with the Society for Creative Anachronism. The teen artists and longtime friends made tiny dragons and other clay figures and offered their wares for sale at the all-kid Peddlers’ Market at the RenFaire Children’s Realm. It was the first RenFaire for nationally-known artist Ouida Touchon of Cruz Nopal Art Studio, who has organized everything from studio shows and tours to exhibits and printmaking workshops in Mesilla and Las Cruces.
