Elaine Forsberg asked Breer to use the fabric scraps Forsberg had saved from decades of sewing projects to make a string quilt for her granddaughter, Melanie Ward, who is graduating from high school in Tahlequah, Okla. At Salina Central High on Tuesday, string quilts made by the students in Linda Brown’s fashions and fabrics class were on display in the commons area. It’s a similar premise upon which Sue McCarty of Roy, Utah, based her award-winning quilt titled “Harmony Within” — the secret to maintaining balance in a relationship. McCarty’s quilt won 2012 best of show and $20,000 in late April at the annual American Quilter’s Society Show & Contest in Paducah, Ky. It was a repeat performance for McCarty who entered the same quilt in last fall’s 2011 International Quilt Festival in Houston and took home best of show honors and $10,000.

Elgin, Oxford, Norfolk Association of Museums (EON) was awarded a Sand Plains Community Development Grant in 2011 to establish a barn quilt trail through the five counties of the Sand Plains region (Elgin, Oxford, Norfolk, Middlesex and Brant). Along with partners in Middlesex, Brantford and Brant County, the museums, archives and galleries of EON have assembled more than 100 quilt locations along the historic roads of the region. Sponsored by the EON Museum Association, the project is inspired by the popularity of barn quilts in the US where many counties have sponsored barn quilt trails as a way to encourage tourism and provide commercial opportunities to businesses. Barn quilts are a single block of a traditional pieced quilt painted on two 4’x8’ plywood sheets to make up one 8’x8’ quilt block. For the past year, hundreds of volunteers including quilters, historians and many community groups have laboured to produce the stories and blocks that now stretch across the five counties of the South Central Ontario Region.

On May 16, McLaughlin, a former art teacher at Old Rochester Regional High School, discussed the quilting codes with members of the Rochester Historical Society. During the war, neither side had enough money to buy blankets for the soldiers so the women had to make them, McLaughlin said. Taking a page out of the history books after the September 11 attacks, McLaughlin and her friends made 30 quilts to send to the American soldiers stationed overseas. Quilt show to draw thousands to KC this weekend - KansasCity. A wholesale trade show will bring about 6,000 visitors to the Kansas City Convention Center Friday through Sunday. But about 2,700 vendors and 3,300 fabric and quilt shop owners and quilting instructors who have the proper credentials are expected, said Bob Ruggiero, an organizer. For the third time since 2002, the International Quilt Market, organized by Quilts Inc. Vendors include manufacturers of fabric, sewing and quilting machines, notions, patterns, quilting books and other quilting equipment. Although the international trade show isn’t open to the public, Kansas City Star Quilts, a book publishing company, is inviting the public to view more than 150 quilts made from quilt patterns published by the newspaper over the years.

Mary Gladwin, Oxford archivist, addresses a gathering at Sparta United Church Saturday to unveil the Southwest Ontario Barn Quilt Trails, a network of barn quilts across the Sand Plains counties. Organizers, volunteers and regional politicians were among those at Sparta United Church Saturday afternoon to officially unveil the Southwest Ontario Barn Quilt Trail, the longest barn quilt trail in Canada. The trail spans across Elgin, Oxford, Norfolk, Brant and Middlesex counties and is comprised of over 100 quilt locations where visitors can see on a self-guided tour. Last September, the federal Sand Plains Community Development Fund provided members of the Elgin, Oxford, Norfolk Association of Museums $178,000 to establish the trail through the five Sand Plains counties.

Washington ALP Students Create Quilts For GA Home - post-journal. The Washington Middle School Advanced Learning Program recently donated Math Quilts to the GA Home. The quilts were created during after-school sessions with Sheri Brandes, the school’s Family & Consumer Science teacher. The students used their geometry and sewing skills to create four quilts with patterns such as Amish Star, Four Patch, Crazy Quilt and Coin Stack.
